Beyond Cognitive Competence:  Linking Community Experiences to Advocacy and Professionalism

    October 15-17 2010

    Savannah, GA

    Historic District

Medical schools and residency programs are striving to meet the challenges of teaching and assessing the core competencies. But it's time to move BEYOND the cognitive aspects of these competencies to focus on methodologies that bring real-world substance -- a face -- to patient-centered care, cultural sensitivity, public health and prevention, advocacy, and professionalism. The 2010 ABSAME Annual Meeting will provide a lively, interactive forum for behavioral scientists, other health care professionals, and community leaders to brainstorm about forming partnerships to create novel educational and service opportunities. We will showcase instructional models based on community initiatives outside the familiar health care arena. Be part of this pedagogical transformation by sharing your own innovative projects. Our goal is to capitalize on the power of non-traditional experiential learning to increase knowledge, enhance skills, heighten awareness, and -- most importantly -- change attitudes.
